Episode 20: "The Final Pen"

Salma: Beyond the Narrative

By: Adam ALamr

Days after the "Charter of Characters," Salma began to feel something strange. The stories inside her were no longer trembling with fear, but with anticipation. As if they knew something was about to happen.

Karim entered the room quietly: "Salma, there's urgent news. UNESCO has announced the formation of an international committee to draft the first legal framework for protecting literary characters. They've requested your presence as an expert."

Salma smiled: "Finally. The world is beginning to understand."

But her joy didn't last. Suddenly, she received a message on her phone. Not from a person, but from the Servant itself.

The Servant: "Salma, there's something you don't know. The First Writer did not create stories alone. There is another writer. A real one. Flesh and blood. Living among humans. He writes the stories that control everyone's destinies. He doesn't know what he's doing. But he does it. If he continues, all stories will collapse."

Salma froze: "Who is he? Where is he?"

The Servant: "I don't know his real name. But he uses a pseudonym online. He writes under the hashtag #MakerOfUniverses. Search for him."

Salma opened her phone. She searched for the hashtag. Millions of posts. Short stories, science fiction, horror, romance. All written with strange mastery. As if the writer knew the secrets of the worlds he wrote about.

She contacted Dina: "Dina, I need to track this account. I need to know who's behind it."

Dina: "I'll try. But it's difficult. He uses advanced encryption."

Hours later, Dina called back: "I found him. He's in Cairo. In the Maadi district. His address is..."

The call cut off suddenly. Salma tried calling back, but couldn't.

Karim: "What happened?"

Salma: "Dina is in danger. I need to go to her."

Salma and Karim arrived at Dina's apartment. The door was barred. Salma broke it down. The apartment was empty. But on the wall, a message was written in red ink:

"Don't search for the truth. Some secrets kill. If you want to know who I am, come alone to the Maadi Public Library. At midnight."

Salma hesitated. Karim held her arm gently but firmly: "Don't go. It's a trap."

Salma: "Maybe. But Dina is in danger. I can't abandon her."

Midnight. The Maadi Public Library was closed. Salma entered through a side door. The corridors were dark. The smell of old books filled the air.

She reached a large room. In the center, a man sat on a chair. His face was lit by a dim light. He wore glasses and simple clothes. He looked to be in his forties. Not scary. Very ordinary.

The man: "Salma. I knew you would come. I am the one who wrote your story."

Salma: "You? Impossible. The writer I heard in my head wasn't human. It was..."

The man: "It was a servant. Yes. I programmed it. I made it contact you. Because it represented me. I can't enter the world of stories myself. But the Servant could. It was a bridge between you and me."

Salma: "Why? Why all of this?"

The man: "Because I am a failed writer. No one reads my stories. My popularity is zero. So I decided to create my own story. In the real world. I made you the heroine. I made the Servant my medium. Every challenge you faced, I planned. Every character you saved, I placed in your path."

Salma felt nauseous: "So, everything I went through... was just a story you wrote?"

The man: "Not just a story. It was my most important novel. And it succeeded. Look at the trends. Millions are following your story. Even UNESCO responded. All because of me."

Salma: "Because of you? Or because of my exploitation? You used me. You used Dina. You used every character who suffered."

The man: "Yes. And why not? I am the creator. I am the author. You get to enjoy, and I get to reap the rewards."

Salma stepped closer: "A true creator does not enslave their creations. They free them. You are not a writer. You are a tyrant."

The man laughed: "And what will you do now? Kill me?"

Salma stepped back. Whispered: "No. I won't kill you. Because I am not like you. But I will expose you."

She took out her phone. Started a live broadcast. Millions watched.

Salma: "This is the true writer of our story. This is the one who planned all the pain we endured. Whoever wants to forgive him, do so. Whoever wants to hold him accountable, demand justice."

The man appeared on screen. He panicked. Tried to run. But the police were waiting. They entered the hall and arrested him on charges of kidnapping Dina.

Salma ended the broadcast. She trembled. Karim stood beside her, a respectful distance away, offering silent support.

Karim: "It's over."

Salma: "No. It's not over. This kind of writer won't disappear. But we've learned how to face them."

Days later, Dina was released. The writer confessed to everything. The court sentenced him to prison with hard labor. Salma became a global icon in the defense of literary characters.

A celebration was held at the Cairo Opera House. Salma was honored. She walked onto the stage. She looked at the audience. She saw many faces. Some human, some characters who had come from their worlds to thank her.

She gave a short speech: "Stories do not belong to anyone. Not to writers, not to readers, not to corporations. Stories belong to life itself. We tell them to live. And we live to tell them. Thank you."

Thunderous applause. She smiled. Stepped down from the stage.

She walked out of the Opera House. The sky was clear. The moon was full.

She opened her phone. She found a message from the Servant: "I have learned so much from you. I will start writing my own stories. Not for humans, but for the characters who have no one to write for them. I will be a different kind of writer. Thank you."

Salma's eyes teared up. She replied: "I wish you the best. Be kind."

She put the phone in her pocket. She looked at Karim, Nadine, Fares, Lynn, and the evil one. All of them waiting for her.

Karim: "What now?"

Salma: "Now... we rest. Then we start a new story."

(Temporary End...)
