Episode 7: "The Global Resonance"
By: Adam ALamr
After days of calm, Salma returns to her normal life. She goes to the newspaper, writes her reports, smiles at her colleagues. But something in her eyes hasn't left: the knowledge that the world is not as it seems.
Karim sits beside her at her desk: "Tell me again... how do you know all this wasn't a dream?"
Salma: "Because dreams don't leave papers in your hand when you wake up."
She takes out the small paper she found after meeting Lynn. It still says: "Remember your promise."
Karim: "And what is your promise?"
Salma: "That I won't abandon anyone."
Suddenly, her phone rings. An unknown number. She answers: "Hello?"
A woman's voice on the other end, tired, trembling: "Salma? You're... you're the journalist who writes about stories?"
Salma: "Who are you?"
The woman: "My name is Nadine. I'm... I'm not from your world. I'm a character in a story. But something strange happened... I was able to get out."
Salma freezes. Whispers: "You got out? How?"
Nadine: "I don't know. I suddenly felt the world around me collapsing. Then I found myself in a strange street. People were looking at me. One of them said: 'You're from Salma's story, aren't you?' How do they know you? How do they know me?"
Salma looks at Karim with terrified eyes. Says into the phone: "Where are you now?"
Nadine: "In Tahrir Square. People are taking pictures of me. Someone is streaming live. Salma... I'm scared."
The call cuts off.
Salma and Karim run toward the exit. Karim: "What's happening?"
Salma: "I don't know. But if a character escaped her story into our world... it means the rules have changed."
Another call stops her. This time, the writer's voice in her head, but not calm as usual. He's terrified.
The writer: "Salma! A terrible mistake has occurred."
Salma: "Nadine? Who is she?"
The writer: "Nadine is a secondary character in a story I wrote years ago. She has nothing to do with Salma. But the evil one... when she accepted the reconciliation, she created a crack in the walls between worlds. Other characters started sensing the other worlds. Some have begun to escape."
Salma: "How do we stop this?"
The writer: "I don't know. This time... I'm not writing this story. The story is writing itself."
Salma and Karim arrive at Tahrir Square. The atmosphere is charged. A crowd gathers around a young woman in strange clothes, as if from another era. Her face is pale, her eyes fearful. Beside her, a man streams on his phone: "We're here with a woman who appeared from nowhere! She says she's from a fictional story!"
Salma pushes through the crowd toward Nadine. Takes her hand: "Come with me. Quickly."
Nadine looks at her in fear: "You're Salma?"
Salma: "Yes. Come."
They pull themselves away from the crowd. Reach a side alley. Nadine gasps: "What's happening to me? Why did I come out?"
Salma: "We'll find out. But first... how did you feel before coming out?"
Nadine: "I heard whispers. Many whispers. Other characters. They were talking about you. About the evil one. About the reconciliation. Then I felt the walls of my world cracking. So I came out."
Suddenly, many phones ring in the street. People receive notifications. Karim opens his phone: "Salma... look."
On the screen, a video spreading rapidly. A woman in New York says in English: "I'm from a romance story written in 2019. I suddenly appeared. I don't know how." Beside her, a young man in Tokyo says in Japanese: "I'm a character in a science fiction story. The world around me collapsed."
Salma feels dizzy. Whispers: "It's spreading. Everywhere."
The writer whispers in her head: "Salma... what we started with the evil one opened a door that cannot be closed. Now every character who felt neglected, everyone who suffered sad endings, everyone abandoned by their writer... they're beginning to wake up. And come out."
Salma: "How many are there?"
The writer: "I don't know. Perhaps thousands. Perhaps millions. Every story ever written."
Nadine looks at Salma with tearful eyes: "I don't want to hurt anyone. I just... want to live. To be real."
Salma embraces her: "I'll protect you. I'll protect everyone. But I need to know where to start."
Her phone rings. A text message from an unknown number:
"If you want to know the truth, come to the newspaper office. Midnight. Alone."
Karim looks at her: "Don't do it. It's a trap."
Salma looks at Nadine, then at the crowd in the square, then at the sky that has begun to rain. She says: "Maybe. But I promised I wouldn't abandon anyone. And that includes all of them."
She looks at Nadine: "I'll return. I promise."
