Episode 6: "The Line of Apology"
Salma: Beyond the Narrative
By: Adam ALamr
Salma hangs up after Karim's call. She decides to go to him immediately. She rushes out of her apartment as the sun has just risen.
She arrives at Karim's apartment. He opens the door with a pale face, tired eyes. He pulls her inside quickly: "Thank God you came. Look."
He leads her to his bedroom. On the wall, written in strange red letters: "Time is running out. Where is my apology?"
Salma touches the writing. It's dry, as if written hours ago. She asks: "When did this happen?"
Karim: "I don't know. I slept last night, and when I woke up, I found it. Salma... what's happening? Who's doing this?"
Salma sighs. Sits on the edge of the bed. Looks at him: "Karim... it's time you knew the truth."
Karim sits across from her: "I'm listening."
Salma: "There are other worlds. Worlds of stories. And the characters we read about... they're real somewhere. And I... I can hear the writer. The writer who created these stories."
Karim stares at her in silence. Then laughs nervously: "This is a joke, right?"
Salma: "I wish it were. But the paper you found with the bodies... it was addressed to him. And the woman you saw in your dream... she's real. She's an old character the writer neglected, and now she wants revenge."
Karim is silent for a long time. Then says quietly: "If this is true... how do we help her?"
Salma smiles: "You believe me?"
Karim: "I don't know. But I saw what I saw. And if you're telling the truth, I'm with you."
Suddenly, the writer's voice whispers in Salma's head: "Salma... you need to speak with her again. Time is running out."
Salma closes her eyes. Whispers: "How? I can't enter her world whenever I want."
The writer: "Lynn can help you. She's the bridge between you. Focus on Lynn's voice."
Salma focuses. She hears Lynn's distant whisper: "Come... we're waiting for you."
She opens her eyes. Finds herself in the narrow underground street. Lynn stands before her, but this time she's not alone. Beside her, the evil one... clearer than ever before. A beautiful, sad woman in an old white dress, her eyes filled with tears.
The evil one: "Salma... you came."
Salma: "Yes. I came to tell you the writer agreed."
The evil one steps back: "Really? He agreed?"
Salma: "He'll write you the line of apology. But he needs time."
The evil one shakes her head: "No more time. Tomorrow... if the line isn't written, I'll burn all the stories. I'll start with Lynn's story."
Lynn pulls the evil one's hand: "Don't. She's my friend."
The evil one looks at Lynn with tenderness: "You're the only friend I have. But I'm tired of waiting."
Salma steps forward: "Give me until midnight. I'll return with the line."
The evil one hesitates. Then nods: "Until midnight. No more."
She dissolves into the darkness. Lynn whispers to Salma: "Hurry. She means it this time."
Salma wakes up in Karim's apartment. Karim holds her hand worriedly: "Salma? You were unconscious for minutes. Are you okay?"
Salma: "I need to talk to the writer now."
She opens her laptop. Types: "Did you hear? Until midnight. Write the line."
Silence. Then a message:
The writer: "I don't know how. What exactly should I write?"
Salma: "Write what's in your heart. Write your regret. Write that you're sorry for leaving her to die alone."
The writer: "But she didn't die. She's here."
Salma: "Because she refused to die. Just write."
Long silence. Then a word appears on the screen:
"Sorry."
Another word appears:
"Sorry I abandoned you."
And a third:
"Sorry I wrote your ending and thought a sad ending was best."
Then a long line:
"I didn't know you would feel betrayed. I didn't know you would remain alive in the darkness, waiting. I'm sorry. Truly sorry."
Salma copies the words. Closes her eyes. Whispers: "Lynn... take them."
She finds herself in the horror world again. Lynn reaches out her hand. Salma whispers the line in her ear. Lynn smiles and runs into the darkness.
Minutes pass. Then a faint light appears from afar. Lynn returns, holding the evil one's hand. The evil one is crying. For the first time, she smiles a genuine smile.
The evil one: "I heard it. Every word."
Salma: "Do you forgive him?"
The evil one: "I don't know. But for the first time, I felt that I exist. That I matter."
Lynn hugs her: "You matter. You're my friend."
The evil one looks at Salma: "Karim is safe. I won't hurt him. And I won't hurt anyone. I'll stay here with Lynn. But if the writer betrays me again... I'll return."
Salma: "He won't betray you. I guarantee it."
The evil one reaches out her hand. Touches Salma's shoulder. For a moment, Salma feels a strange warmth. Then the evil one dissolves into the light.
Lynn whispers: "Thank you. Now I'm not alone."
Salma wakes up in Karim's apartment. Karim sits before her, smiling: "You're back. You were gone ten minutes this time."
Salma smiles: "It's over. I think."
Karim: "Really?"
Salma: "For now... temporarily."
Salma's phone rings. A message from an unknown number:
"Thank you. I'll see you soon... in another dream."
Salma smiles. Looks out the window. The sky is clear. For the first time in days, she feels peace.
Karim: "What now?"
Salma: "We wait. Because stories never really end."
