Episode 5: "Heart of the Shadow"

Salma: Beyond the Narrative

By: Adam ALamr

Salma finds herself in the narrow underground street. Lynn stands before her, smiling her mysterious smile.

Lynn: "Welcome back. I knew you would return."

Salma looks around. Old houses, faint lighting, terrifying silence. She asks: "Where exactly are we?"

Lynn: "In my world. In the story 'The Doll's House.' I've lived here for ten years. Ever since the writer created me and left me."

Salma: "Ten years? Alone?"

Lynn: "I'm not alone. There are the dolls. But they're not friends. They... are her."

Salma: "The evil one?"

Lynn nods: "She visits me every night. Sits with me, tells me about her life before she became like this. She was a child like me. She was the heroine of a beautiful story. Then she grew up, and the writer wanted to give her a sad ending. Why, do you think?"

Salma sits on the sidewalk beside Lynn: "I don't know. The writer... isn't perfect. He makes mistakes sometimes."

Lynn: "That's what I told her. But she doesn't believe. She says he abandoned her on purpose. He writes new stories and lets the old ones die."

Salma: "But she didn't die. She's here."

Lynn: "Because she refused to die. Refused the ending he wrote for her. So she became a shadow. Moving between stories, searching for someone to write her a new ending."

A moment of silence. Then Salma asks: "Do you think she can be saved?"

Lynn looks at her with wide eyes: "I don't know. But I try. I try to remind her of who she was. Every night I tell her: Remember how you used to laugh, how you loved the sun, how you used to run in the fields. I imagine she smiles sometimes before she disappears."

A tear rolls down Salma's cheek. She whispers: "You're very brave, Lynn."

Lynn: "I'm not brave. I just don't want to be alone. If she's here, I'm not alone."

Suddenly, the atmosphere changes. Wind begins to blow strongly. The faint lights flicker. Lynn stands quickly: "She's coming. You must hide."

Salma: "No. I want to talk to her."

Lynn: "She's angry today. Please..."

But Salma doesn't move. The shadow forms before her. The evil one, this time clearer. A woman in her thirties, her face beautiful but pale, her eyes burning with sad fire.

The evil one: "Salma... you returned. Haven't you had enough?"

Salma: "I came to understand. Lynn told me about you. About your past."

The evil one laughs a sad laugh: "My past? The writer erased it."

Salma: "But Lynn remembers. She remembers you were a happy child, who loved the sun and running in the fields."

The evil one pauses. For a moment, something like weakness appears in her eyes. Then she regains her composure: "That was a long time ago. Before he betrayed me."

Salma: "What if he could fix it? What if he wrote you a new ending?"

The evil one: "I don't believe him. He deceived me once."

Salma: "But Lynn believes. And she's here with you every night. Isn't that proof that someone cares about you?"

The evil one looks at Lynn. The little girl smiles at her cautiously. The evil one hesitates. Then she reaches her hand toward Lynn... but withdraws.

The evil one: "I can't. Fear prevents me. My fear of believing and then being deceived again."

Salma: "I'm here. I won't leave you. And I won't leave Lynn. Give me a chance."

Long silence. The wind calms. The lights settle. Then the evil one whispers: "Karim... he's safe now. I won't hurt him. But I want proof of your sincerity."

Salma: "What proof?"

The evil one: "The writer. I want him to write me one line. A line admitting his mistake. A line saying he's sorry. If he does, I'll stop hunting him. I'll stay here in my world with Lynn. And I won't hurt anyone."

Salma: "I'll tell him. I'll make him do it."

The evil one: "You have three nights. If the line doesn't come, I'll start again. And this time... I won't leave anyone."

She dissolves into the darkness. Lynn runs to Salma and hugs her: "Thank you. I haven't seen her this calm in years."

Salma pats her head: "I'll do what I can, Lynn. I promise."

Salma wakes up in her apartment. Dawn enters through the window. She looks at her hand. Finds a small paper in it, written on it: "Remember your promise."

She opens her laptop. Writes to the writer: "I heard everything. She wants you to write one line admitting your mistake. One line saying you're sorry. Only three nights."

A quick reply: "I can't. If I write that, I'll open a door that can't be closed. Every neglected character will ask for an apology."

Salma: "But she's not just any character. She's different. And Lynn is there. She trusts me. Don't let me down."

Long silence. Then:

The writer: "I'll think. Wait."

Salma closes the laptop. Looks at the sky from the balcony. Whispers: "Lynn, I'll keep my promise."

Suddenly, the phone rings. Karim calls: "Salma! I'm fine. I'm home. I don't know how I returned, but I'm here. Come quickly, there's something strange in my room."

Salma rushes toward the apartment door. Decides: "I won't stop until the end."
